How is a Ceramic Dog Urn Made?

Creating a ceramic dog urn is a precise and artisanal process consisting of several steps. Each urn is lovingly and attentively handmade, making the final result not just functional, but also a unique piece of art.

1. Shaping the Clay

The process begins by kneading natural clay to remove air bubbles. Then, the urn’s form is shaped — by hand, on a pottery wheel, or using a mould with slip clay. Slip clay is a liquid form of clay poured into a plaster mould, ideal for detailed or repeatable designs. Depending on the technique and concept, a symbolic shape or a depiction of a dog may be included in the urn.

2. Drying

The raw urn is then slowly dried to prevent cracks or warping. This may take several days, depending on the size and thickness of the ceramic.

3. Bisque Firing (First Firing)

Once fully dried, the urn is fired in a ceramic kiln at around 900 °C (1650 °F). This first firing makes the urn strong and ready for glazing.

4. Glazing

After cooling, a glaze layer is carefully applied by hand. The glaze not only adds colour and shine but also protects the urn from external influences.

5. Second Firing (Glaze Firing)

The glazed urn is then fired again, this time at a higher temperature of around 1,200 °C (2200 °F). During this firing, the glaze fuses with the surface, resulting in a durable, glossy, and water-resistant finish.
