Absolutely. Ceramic is a tried and tested option for urns. There are multiple reasons why ceramic is a primary material when artisans create cremation urns for ashes.
Ceramic is a very scratch resistant material, which means is nice to know while handling the urn. Ceramic urns have been used to store ashes for a long time, having been a popular choice in both Ancient Greece and ancient Rome. This means skilled artisans know a lot about the material, and ceramic urns have withstood the test of time.
Another reason ceramic urns are a popular choice is that the material allows for great variety in design. This makes it easier to find the urn that is best suited for your loved one. We offer a variety of urn, including more traditional designs. The great benefit of using ceramic urns for ashes is that it allows for a more modern and contemporary look, such as urns with LED lights and urns depicting one of the constellations.
While ceramic is a very durable and scratch resistant material, its structure means it is not perfectly protected against shattering. If a ceramic urn is dropped from a few feet, chances are that it may break.
If you are planning on keeping the urn in a room with kids and/or pets, a ceramic urn might not be the most suitable option unless you have a safe space to place it. In those cases, consider a stone urn, stainless steel urn, or a wooden urn.
Humanity has been creating ceramic pottery such as urns for thousands of centuries. Some of the oldest known ceramics have been dated to be at least 2300 years old! That means it’s safe to say that, in the right circumstances, ceramic urns can last for a remarkably long time.
Under the right conditions, a ceramic urn can be buried. However, since the main purpose of these urns is to be displayed in a home or in a columbarium (urn wall), other materials might be more appropriate. For example, urns made of granite, stainless steel or bronze urns could be a more suitable for choice.
If you’d prefer a ceramic urn which can be buried, it should be suitable for storage outside. Check the ‘Suitable for’ filter, or check the ‘suitable for’ attribute in the product description. Additionally, take the following into account:
How a ceramic urns exactly seals, depends on the model. However, most urns have a lid on top that twists in. Additionally, a sealant is provided. If you wish to seal the urn, you can apply the sealant to the lid and then securely attach it to the urn. After about a day (24 hours), the sealant is dry.
Make sure to check the instructions on the sealant on how to use it.
